Imagine that a person opens Google or Yandex and searches for “industrial equipment repair”, “accountant for a small business” or “buy concrete rings”. The search engine shows pages that it considers most useful for this request.
SEO means improving a website so its pages can appear in search results for useful queries. The letters stand for Search Engine Optimization.
SEO is not about tricking a search engine. It is about helping a website answer the real questions of potential customers.
What does SEO work include?
SEO is not one technical setting. First, you need to understand what people search for, which words they use and where they are. This helps you decide which pages the website needs.
For example, a company may sell equipment and spare parts and also provide repairs. If everything appears in one paragraph on the home page, both visitors and search engines may find the offer difficult to understand. Separate, clear pages often work better for different services.
The work usually includes:
- researching search demand and the words customers use;
- reviewing websites that already appear in search results;
- planning the website structure and separate pages for services or products;
- writing clear content, headings and descriptions;
- fixing technical problems that stop search engines from reading pages;
- checking results and improving the website over time.
How is SEO different from advertising?
Paid advertising
You can start ads quite quickly. They bring visitors while you pay for views or clicks. When the budget ends, the traffic usually stops.
SEO
SEO results grow gradually. You invest in the website, its pages and its content. Useful pages can continue bringing search visitors without payment for every click.
This does not mean SEO is always better than advertising. They solve different problems. Ads may be faster when you need enquiries now. SEO can become a stable channel when people regularly search for your services and the company plans to work for a long time.
Why does SEO take time?
After a change, search engines need to visit the pages again, evaluate them and compare them with other websites. Competitors also improve their sites. This is why SEO should be judged over time, not after a few days.
No one can give an exact timeline without studying the website and market. Competition, website quality, location, the number of pages and regular work all affect the result.
When can SEO help a business?
SEO may be useful when:
- people already search for your products or services in Google or Yandex;
- your company has several services, categories or business areas;
- customers need to compare options before buying;
- you plan to improve the website for more than a few weeks;
- you need another source of enquiries besides referrals and social media.
When should SEO not be the first step?
Sometimes another problem should be solved first. Your product may be completely new, so people do not know how to search for it. The website offer may be unclear, the price may not fit the market, or the company may not know which customers it wants.
SEO is also not the best single tool when you need sales immediately. Ads, direct sales, partnerships or other channels may be more suitable.
What should you check before starting?
Before you invest, answer at least four questions:
- How many people search for your services in the target market?
- Which companies already appear in search, and what do their websites offer?
- Which pages does your business need?
- What should a visitor do after opening the website?
This research cannot guarantee a result. It helps you make a better decision and understand where the work and budget will go.
In short
SEO connects search demand with useful pages on your website. People describe a problem, find the right page, learn about your offer and decide whether to contact you.
Do not start with technical terms. Start with customers, demand and competitors. Then you can decide whether you need a new website, improvements to the current one, SEO, ads or another channel.
